Bra event in Kent grows to displays in four cities
A breast cancer awareness event marked by more than 1,000 bras dangling over the Cuyahoga River in Kent last year has been expanded to four communities this year. The original Bras Across the Crooked River is now called Celtic Club Fights Breast Cancer, with displays planned for Kent, Akron, Jackson Township and Barberton in September, said Jim Collver, president of the sponsoring Celtic Club.Because businesses and organizations in Summit, Stark and Portage counties have helped collect the donated bras, the club initially thought about rotating the bra display among the counties each year. But area residents have been especially generous, Collver said.“Response to the bra display last year was so overwhelmingly positive, we decided we should have at least one bra display in each county this year,” he said. The collection of bras will be displayed for a single day at each location, then be taken down and distributed to charities that support women’s shelters or collect supplies for victims of natural disasters.Although the club is not directly collecting for cancer groups, Collver said he wants the bras to raise awareness of their fight.“Everybody’s touched by this anymore,” he said.Bras will be displayed on the bridge that spans Wooster Road and Robinson Street in Barberton on Sept. 3.The bras will return to Kent on Sept. 10, hanging from the Main Street bridge over the Cuyahoga River. In Jackson Township, the bras will be strung between two cranes visible from Interstate 77 at Studio Arts and Glass, 7495 Strauss Ave. NW, on Sept. 16.On Sept. 23, bras will be displayed on the fire escapes of the Akron Civic Theatre building facing Lock 3 Park. The drive to collect the bras is under way at the following sites:Akron CornerStone Medical Services, EnVision Apartments, Liberty Harley-Davidson, Revival, Summit County Adult Probation, Summit Federal Credit Union, Towpath Credit Union, Tri-County Regional Labor Council, University of Akron Student Union Information Center , VFW Mains Post 1070.Barberton Barberton Herald, Center Court, Mayor’s Office.Canton Arcadia Grille, Buzzbin Magazine Art and Music Shop, Cyrus Custom Framing and Art Gallery, Dr. Peter Ferguson, Mercy Medical Center Mercy Boutique, The Repository.Cuyahoga Falls Connecting Touch Therapy and Wellness Center.FairlawnTowpath Credit Union.Green The Suburbanite.Hartville Hartville News.Jackson Township Kent State University Stark, Studio Arts and Glass.Kent The Arctic Squirrel, Kent Area Chamber of Commerce, Kent Mayor’s Office, Kent State Student Center, Kent State Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Main Street Tavern, McKay Bricker Framing, Pufferbelly Restaurant, Whitehall Terrace.Mantua Carlton Harley-Davidson, Jake’s Restaurant.RavennaGuido’s Pizza, Ravenna Athletic Center, Record-Courier.StowRecord Publishing.Tallmadge Tallmadge Hair Service and Spa.Paula Schleis can be reached at 330-996-3741 or pschleis@thebeaconjournal.com.
